Gentleman’s Cut Bourbon: New Releases

NBA legend Steph Curry created Gentleman’s Cut in partnership with vintner John Schwartz and Boone County Distilling. I have been tasting these Bourbons for the last few years. These are the most ambitious releases yet. That’s hardly a surprise given Curry’s hall-of-fame NBA career and Schwartz’s many projects, including the wines he makes with iconic winemakers Heidi Barrett (Au Sommet, Amuse Bouche, Vin Perdu) and Richard Peterson (Brut Rosé, Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir). Although this might seem like a celebrity project, Curry is deeply involved in the blending and selection process. In conversation, I have been impressed with how passionate Curry is about Bourbon. Moreover, Curry and his wife, Ayesha, are very much front and center in using their visibility and the Bourbon project to help drive their Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation, which provides meals, education and sports opportunities for underserved children in the greater Oakland area. The latest batch of Bourbons includes a collaboration with Chef José Andrés.

The Player Exclusive Bourbon IV Edition is laced with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, dried figs and light caramel. It offers terrific depth and persistence, with fine balance and a moderately sweet finish. This versatile Bourbon is delicious neat or on the rocks. The IV Edition was bottled to celebrate Steph Curry surpassing 4,000 three-point baskets. 100 proof; 1,000 bottles produced. 93

The Player Exclusive Bourbon José Andrés, a collaboration between Steph Curry and renowned Chef José Andrés, is a ten-year Bourbon that finishes its aging in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, which contributes a great deal of flavor complexity and structure. Maraschino cherry, dried herbs, mint, spice and toasty oak are front and center. This bold Bourbon makes a strong statement. It demands attention. A portion of the proceeds go to World Kitchen, the humanitarian organization Andrés founded to provides meals for people facing starvation and food insecurity around the world. 107 proof; 800 bottles produced. 93  

The Player Exclusive Bourbon Father & Son Edition is a 16-year Bourbon with a mash bill of 73% Corn, 13% Rye and 12% Malted Barley. It offers up scents of candied orange peel, cedar, nutmeg, pipe tobacco, kirsch and caramel. Smooth, polished contours wrap it all together. This stylish Bourbon has a lot to offer. Steph Curry bottled this edition during his 16th season in the NBA, the same number of seasons his father, Dell, played in the NBA as well. 100 proof; 1,000 bottles produced. 95
