Countdown #40 to #21...

#40: 2021 Garage Wine Co. Carignan VIGNO

$95, Maule, Chile

JH: “A small producer focused on developing high-quality Cariñenas from Chile, VIGNO is one of those initiatives that absolutely deserves your attention.”

The 2021 Carignan VIGNO originates from Empedrado in the Maule Region. Sourced from a cold area in a chilly year, it was aged for two winters in new French oak barrels. Garnet in hue, it presents nuanced, subtle aromas of pomegranate, cherry and herbs, complemented by notes of cotton candy, white pepper, earth and oak. Dry, lean and silky, with a compact and refreshing mouthfeel, this Carignan delivers a wild yet balanced palate. It stands out as a rare and expressive VIGNO, offering an unusual flavor profile that lingers long. Simply delicious.

Technical Director Vincent Millet and his team turned out a stunning set of wines at Calon-Ségur. The Grand Vin is majestic in 2021.

#39: 2021 Château Calon Ségur

$125, Bordeaux, France

AG: Calon Ségur is one of the standouts from Bordeaux’s irregular 2021 vintage. The team led by Technical Director Vincent Millet turned out a super-classic Saint-Estèphe that delivers superb intensity and tons of character. Best of all, Calon Ségur remains a very fine value in the world of top-flight wine.”

A Saint-Estèphe of stature and vertical intensity, the 2021 Calon Ségur dazzles from the very first taste. Spice, menthol, licorice, black cherry, mint and espresso are some of the many notes that build with a bit of coaxing. The 2021 clocks in at a modest 12.9% in alcohol, yet it possesses tremendous density and textural resonance. What a wine!

97 points – Antonio Galloni, December 2023

#38: 2020 Domaine A. Clape Cornas

$195, Northern Rhône, France

NG: “The full-bodied 2020 Cornas is a wild, concentrated expression that captures everything Clape enthusiasts love. With a juicy fruit core, meaty undertones and rustic funk, this instant classic boasts remarkably round tannins and a savory, persistent finish.”

The full-bodied 2020 Cornas is a wild thing. Concentrated and expressive, it combines all the elements that Clape-enthusiasts rave about: a juicy core of fruit, ferrous gradations, crushed flowers, meaty undertones, rustic funkiness and an herbal edge. Remarkably round tannins lend solid structure to the delicious 2020, an instant classic that shows excellent persistence on the savory finish.

#37: 2021 El Enemigo Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Gualtallary

$120, Mendoza, Argentina

JH: “When it debuted, this wine was a game-changer in Argentina. It’s consistently one of the best Cabernet Francs in the world.”

Is it possible to create a wine with structure but without weight? The 2021 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Gualtallary offers a remarkable answer to that apparent paradox, finding the solution in a balanced combination of terroir and careful cellar work. It's almost utopian—a mountain wine with the structure and character of high-altitude vineyards, yet with the agility and freshness of an oceanic red. Purple in hue, it opens with blackberry and plum, layered with mountain herbs, a hint of sour cherry, cassis and floral tones of violet and lavender. Dry and juicy, with a slightly compact feel, the wine glides across the palate with weightless grace, supported by fine, chalky tannins. This wine is a triumph.

Leo Alzinger, whose aim is to “refine the cool, precise style” his parents forged.

#36: 2022 Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg Smaragd

$60, Wachau, Austria

AK: “Sinuousness and clarity have long been the hallmarks of this estate. Leo and Katharina Alzinger craft fabulous Wachau wines every year.”

The 2022 Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd is from one steep, convex parcel at higher elevation, shaded by a higher ridge in the late afternoon. For the warm Loibenberg, this is a rather cool spot. The nose is shy at first, with the merest crackle of reduction still hovering in the background. The palate is a picture of clarity, displaying pure, absolutely translucent citrus that shimmers with tangerine one moment and zestier Meyer lemon next. A slight backdrop of yeast buffers the undeniable stoniness and adds body and gentleness to this essentially taut, bright, smooth but super slender wine. The finish rings with zestiness—gentle and quiet but oh so definite. Purity and elegance characterize this wine absolutely. (Bone-dry)

Realm's Benoit Touquette and Scott Becker in their Hartwell XX Vineyard just before harvest 2021.

#35: 2021 Realm Cellars The Bard

$160, Napa Valley, California, United States

AG: “Realm is one of Napa Valley’s elite estates. The team led by CEO Scott Becker and Winemaker Benoit Touquette draws on a number of top vineyard sources for their range of sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignons. The Bard offers wine lovers a very good look at the house style at a price that is more approachable in the context of the region."

The 2021 The Bard is fabulous. Rich, ample and beautifully resonant, the 2021 offers up generous dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice, spice, menthol and pipe tobacco. Full-bodied and voluptuous, the 2021 flaunts tons of flavor intensity and vibrancy. It’s a gorgeous wine, especially considering it is the largest-production wine at Realm.

95 pointsAntonio Galloni, December 2023

#34: 2021 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate Bottled

$75, Santa Cruz Mountains, California, United States

BN: “Mount Eden's 2021 Pinot Noir Estate Bottled is one of the finest renditions of this wine in recent memory. A product of an absolutely punishing drought season, the 2021 emerged on the other side with a treasure trove of layers and absolute polish. Jeffrey Patterson showed once again that the Santa Cruz Mountains can produce world-class Pinot Noir in the right hands, and at a fraction of the cost of many of its Old World peers, no less.”

The 2021 Pinot Noir Estate Bottled unfolds with a blockbuster bouquet of macerated red cherry, lavender, new leather and clove. Aged in 40% new French oak for ten to eleven months, it’s broad and ample on the palate. Layers of fresh berry fruit, supple tannins and gentle citrus succulence introduce a wine of extreme class and pedigree. The tannins are just so refined, and the delineation of flavors is superb. Vivid, lively, meticulous and calibrated, this is a testament to the heights attainable with Pinot Noir in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

96 pointsBilly Norris, September 2024

#33: 2021 Cornell Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

$179, Sonoma, California, United States

AG: In 2013, after years of modest results, proprietors Henry and Vanessa Cornell completely rebooted their Spring Mountain estate. The Cornells brought in vineyard guru Phil Coturri to redevelop the site and Françoise Peschon to oversee winemaking. The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. The team led by winemaker Elizabeth Tangney and Peschon, now in a consulting role, turned out a brilliant 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cornell Cabernets offer a superb expression of Spring Mountain and remain very well priced within the context of elite Napa Valley and Sonoma Cabernets.”

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is showing very well for a wine that was bottled just a few months ago. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, conferring notable freshness and vibrancy. Medium in body and beautifully persistent, the 2021 impresses with its finesse more than anything else. Time in the glass brings out hints of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, lavender and spice. The Cornell Cabernet Sauvignon usually needs a few years to blossom post bottling, as I once again saw with the 2018 that I opened at home recently. I expect that will be the case here as well. In a word: regal.

Sister and brother team, Cristiana and Antonio Tiberio.

#32: 2021 Tiberio Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Fonte Canale

$120, Abruzzo, Italy

EG: “The success of Tiberio’s Fonte Canale has catapulted Trebbiano d'Abruzzo to the world stage. Over 20 years ago, this brother-and-sister team began nursing an old vineyard back to health in the hills of Cugnoli, Abruzzo. The result of their work is the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Fonte Canale, an Italian white wine that can hold its own against the best from Burgundy and beyond. Liquid rocks and minerals abound in this model of purity.”

Wildly fresh, the 2021 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Fonte Canale is impossible to ignore, with a vivid blend of fennel and minty herbs, stone dust, flint and crushed green apples. This flows across the palate with liquid florals and depths of lime-infused orchard fruits, taking on a distinctly salty sensation toward the close. A whiplash of minerality and zesty acidity enlivens the finale as the 2021 finishes with staining concentration yet still vibrant and chiseled. Fonte Canale remains the benchmark for Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, without a runner-up anywhere in site.

The barrel-aging cellars at Le Potazzine.

#31: 2019 Le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino

$100, Tuscany, Italy

EG: “The first time I tasted this wine from bottle is forever etched in my memory. Its power, radiance and balance left me in awe—somehow deep and concentrated yet also finessed and graceful. Gigliola Gorelli and her two daughters, Sofia and Viola, farm their high-elevation vineyards in the northwest of Montalcino. Deceptively approachable in youth, this is a Brunello that ages remarkably well. I fill my own cellar with it every year.”

Stunning from the first tilt of the glass, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is impossible to ignore. This blends an array of dried flowers with autumnal spices, cedar-tinged cherries and clove hints in a way that I find wildly appealing. It sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk guided by bright acidity as depths of wild berry fruits and mineral tones saturate toward the close. The 2019 lingers impossibly long, leaving a staining of primary concentration to mingle with grippy tannins and licorice nuances, yet an airy freshness remains through it all. The combination of house style and vintage character here is otherworldly. It will take much willpower to keep our hands off of the 2019 long enough to watch it properly mature. Spellbinding.

98 pointsEric Guido, November 2023

#30: 2014 Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico

$450, Ribera del Duero, Spain

JH: “Quite simply, this is the most iconic wine in Spain.”

The 2014 Unico is primarily composed of Tempranillo, with an additional 6% dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, both sourced from the eponymous property in Ribera del Duero. Aged at length in barrels and large oak vats, the combination of aging methods brings out the wine's nuances in what was a generous year. A dark garnet-red in the glass. The aromas offer licorice and cedar notes alongside hints of orange peel, petit four, cola and pine. There's a background of ripe dark fruit. The palate is dry and plush with a chalky texture and supple tannins, contributing to the complex character. A nuanced red just at the beginning of its life.

97 points Joaquín Hidalgo, September 2023

Nicola and Stefania Oberto at Trediberri, where the wines continue to impress. The Barolo Berri is especially fine in 2020.

#29: 2020 Trediberri Barolo Berri

$58, Piedmont, Italy

AG: In just over a decade, Nicola and Stefania Oberto have built one of Piedmont’s most exciting estates. Their passion, attention to detail and continuous drive to improve are evident in every detail. Trediberri captures a spirit of innovation wedded to classicism that exemplifies the very best of Piedmont’s young generation of producers. Best of all, the wines are exceedingly fairly priced.”

Nicola and Stefania Oberto may very well put Berri on the map with their 2020 Barolo Berri. What a wine. Deep, soaring and wonderfully expressive, the 2020 is stunning in its beauty. Dark red/purplish fruit, orange peel, cinnamon, rose petal and lavender are all amplified in a vertical, soaring Barolo of magnificent intensity. Silky, polished tannins round things out in style. The 2020 is pure and sensual to the core - a total pleasure bomb.

96 pointsAntonio Galloni, November 2023

#28: 2020 Château L’Eglise-Clinet

$330, Bordeaux, France

NM: The 2020 l'Eglise-Clinet is tinged with poignancy, as winemaker Denis Durantou passed away that spring. But his daughters continued his legacy and completed this fabulous Pomerol that shone during a blind tasting. It's a wine that will give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure."

The 2020 L'Eglise-Clinet has a very intense bouquet with multi-layered red and black fruit, cedar and iron scents—complex and engaging, though there is a touch of oak still to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, saturated tannins. Satin-textured, seamless and very precise with an irresistible, youthful, sensual finish, this is a brilliant wine that needs a few years in bottle (if you can resist).

98 points Neal Martin, January 2024

Nicolas Chevrol, Winemaker at Château de Saint Cosme, during Vinous Icons 2024 in NYC.

#27: 2021 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Poste

$160, Southern Rhône, France

NG: “The 2021 Le Poste is a standout wine from Château de Saint Cosme, masterfully marrying power and complexity. It captures Louis Barruol's signature style and the essence of the vintage, marking it as an instant classic and a top contender for wine of the year in Gigondas.”

The shining star of the 2021 vintage at Château de Saint Cosme is the Gigondas Le Poste. Masterfully combining power and complexity, it neatly captures both the signature style of Louis Barruol and the personality of the 2021 vintage in Gigondas. Pronounced, intense aromas of orange blossom, rose petal, violets, redcurrant, raspberry, red plum, clove and cedar all grace this fragrant elixir. The concentrated palate accentuates the wine’s floral lift and offers a true sense of verticality. The 2021 Gigondas Le Poste is an instant classic and a strong contender for the wine of the vintage.

95 pointsNicolas Greinacher, August 2023

#26: 2021 Greywacke Wild Sauvignon

$30, Marlborough, New Zealand

RG: “I would be remiss not to include the 2021 Wild Sauvignon in my list of wines of the year. While the 2022 has since been released, you can still get your hands on the 2021 – and you should. It’s the best yet from Kevin Judd’s Greywacke. This is not a fruit party in your glass but a textured, firm and complex white. It's a wine that has all the right bits in all the right places then follows it up with length and persistence.”

The 2021 Wild Sauvignon screams class. It was a small vintage; poor flowering lead to small crops, and a subsequent dry summer guaranteed intense concentration. It is firm and intense, almost punching you between the eyes with its drive created through a combination of acid and phenolics, which provide structure and ensure this is one that will age gracefully. Aromatically, however, it's restrained and layered, offering everything from blackcurrant and nectarine to fennel. In summary, it's a wine that has all the right bits in all the right places and follows it up with length and persistence.

#25: 2021 Viñedo Chadwick

$380, Maipo, Chile

JH: “This is the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, hands down.”

The 2021 Viñedo Chadwick is a Cabernet Sauvignon with a dash of Petit Verdot (3%) from Puente Alto, Maipo. It was aged for 22 months, 80% in new French oak barrels and 20% in foudres. The mild summer in the area helped to sculpt the vivid, nuanced aromatic profile: crystal clear blackcurrant notes with sour cherry and raspberry layers plus hints of pepper over a faint cigar box bed. Silky and dry in the mouth, the finely tuned Maipo tannins and refreshing acidity from the cool year make for a long-lasting, complex wine. A Bordeaux-inspired red that enjoyed the very Bordelaise weather in the region this year.

98 points Joaquín Hidalgo, March 2023

#24: Aubert Chardonnay CIX Estate

$195, Sonoma, California, United States

AG: Mark and Teresa Aubert consistently produce some of the most compelling Chardonnays in California. The Aubert Chardonnays are often quite showy on release, but time has shown they also age exceptionally well. Readers will find stylish, sumptuous Chardonnays that exalt the essence of site.”

The 2022 Chardonnay CIX Estate is rich, ample and explosive. A classic Mark Aubert wine, the CIX is off the charts. Soaring aromatics and deep, layered fruit take hold of the senses and never let up. White orchard fruit, jasmine, lemon confit, white pepper and spice lend nuance to a Chardonnay built on textural resonance. The 2022 is arrestingly beautiful from the first taste. Montrachet clone here really sings.

A view of Saint-Émilion in the distance from the tasting room at Château Canon.

#23: 2021 Château Canon

$115, Bordeaux, France

AG: “Canon is a reference-point château in Saint-Émilion, but its ascent into the stratosphere really started in 2015, when Technical Director Nicolas Audebert took the foundations laid by his predecessor, John Kolasa, and added his own measure of polish and vibrancy. Today, Canon routinely turns out some of the most compelling wines in Bordeaux. The 2021 is a superb example of the new Canon in a challenging year.”

The 2021 Canon shows just how magical this site is. Vertical and explosive in feel, with tons of pure power, it impresses with its intensity, drive and super-classic profile. Bright saline notes and vibrant tannins give the 2021 a feeling of energy that only gains momentum with time in the glass. It's not an easy Canon, like the 2015 or 2018, but it is incredibly expressive. It is the sort of wine that only truly emerges with time in bottle. I would be thrilled to own it. Canon must surely be one of the great relative values in first-class wine. Wow.

97 pointsAntonio Galloni, December 2023

#22: 2022 The Sadie Family Wines Palladius

$140, Swartland, South Africa

NM: “A blend of almost a dozen white varieties from several sites, winemaker Eben Sadie seemed euphoric about this latest Palladius, claiming it was the wine that he always intended it to be. Finally, he got there. With its delectable waxy nose and palate full of tension, this is an exceptional wine that will give 20 to 30 years of drinking pleasure”

The 2022 Palladius is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Sémillon Blanc & Gris, Palomino, Verdelho, Colombard, Clairette Blanche and Viognier from several sites. Eben Sadie says that this is the wine he has wanted to make. It has a delectable nose with wax resin, linseed oil and hints of orange blossom. The palate is well balanced with a killer line of acidity. Taut, fresh and saline, it possesses immense nervosité on the finish that lingers in the mouth. This is even better than the 2021.

97 pointsNeal Martin, August 2024

#21: 2021 Wynns Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch

$110, Coonawarra, Australia

AH: “With unmatched access to prime Coonawarra vineyards and the outstanding 2021 vintage, the winemaking team at Wynns, headed up by Senior Winemaker Sue Hodder, has crafted a miraculous edition of this benchmark Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. Suave and shapely with superb definition and finesse underscored by a rich vein of tannins, it radiates class from every pore with breathtaking balance and finesse and promises a long and distinguished future.”

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Wynns John Riddoch is stylish and built for the long haul. It takes a couple of days to show its true colors. It radiates with blackcurrant, gravel and dried mint aromas, with a dusting of earth all wrapped up in a gentle blanket of French oak. Composed and super refined, the wine is underpinned by a line of seductive yet firm tannins with killer length and balance to finish. It is already very approachable but with serious staying power.
