2025 Tuscany Preview

BY ANTONIO GALLONI | FEBRUARY 27, 2025

Our annual Tuscan Preview covers a handful of wines that are entering the market shortly. After the near-perfect 2021 vintage, producers were dealt with a far more challenging set of weather conditions throughout 2022. Intense heat and drought followed by rain just before harvest yielded wines that mostly offer very attractive forward fruit along with mid-weight structure. Based on what I have tasted so far, Merlot appears to be the most affected variety. Some producers also reported challenges with Cabernet Franc, but because Franc is most often used as a blender, its performance in any given year is less of an issue in many wines. Given the expanse of the terrain and the natural variability that confers, generalizations about the growing season and wines will be of little use for the 2022s. Instead, I have added the specifics for each estate in the respective producer commentaries.

Some Thoughts on Scores…

Following the exceptional 2021s, there is bound to be a letdown in the 2022s. In my view, it is absolutely critical that scores reflect the true nature of wines and vintages. When that is not the case, when scores are always high for the same wines each and every year, consumers lose interest because they can no longer distinguish the good from the very good from the truly exceptional. The wines that readers of this publication care about are mostly small-production wines made by people, not corporations. Even those with larger productions still pale in comparison with the volumes turned out by industrial operations. Some variation from year to year is not only to be expected, but rather is an essential attribute of truly handmade wines.

I tasted all the wines in this report in February 2025, most of them more than once.
