1965 Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino

What a pleasure it is to taste Col d'Orcia's 1965 Brunello di Montalcino, a wine that was still in barrel when the Marone Cinzano family bought the property in 1973. Mocha, worn-in leather, molasses and tobacco are some of the notes that emerge from this deeply-colored, intense Brunello. The 1965 is decidedly rustic, rough around the edges and fully mature, but it also possesses remarkable density for a wine of its age. Although not especially refined, the 1965 has unquestionably held up well. Moreover, it speaks eloquently to the aging potential of wines from this site and provides a fascinating window into a long-past era in Montalcino and at Col d'Orcia. 90/Drink now.
