Cellar Favorite: 1988 Domaine Pierre Morey Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

BY NEAL MARTIN | DECEMBER 23, 2024
I have always loved the wines from Pierre Morey before he joined as winemaker at Domaine Leflaive in the very year the 1988 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru was made. I had not encountered a bottle for several years until one was poured for lunch following a horizontal of 1978 Burgundy. It displayed the yellow fruit as it had done before, perhaps slightly less mineral-driven on the nose, fleeting glimpses of honeysuckle mixed with butterscotch indicating its maturity. The palate has a wonderful waxy texture, a twist of sour lemon lending tension with a harmonious and very persistent finish. Well-kept bottles will continue to give pleasure for another decade.
