Cellar Favorite: 2015 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre

BY NEAL MARTIN | APRIL 28, 2025

During my recent trip to Beaujolais, I was treated to a smattering of mature bottles that proved once again how exquisitely Gamay can age. None more so than this delectable ten-year-old Morgon popped open during my visit to one of Beaujolais’ most renowned producers, Marcel Lapierre.

The 2015 Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre, whose vintage is discreetly communicated in Roman numerals (MMXV), has a sensual bouquet replete with raspberries and wild hedgerow, touches of pencil shavings and smoke. The aromatics are beguiling, very complex and focused, perhaps nodding towards Pinot Noir yet incontrovertibly Gamay. The palate is medium-bodied, with a fresh, vibrant entry and finely chiselled tannins. Tensile and extraordinarily harmonious with strawberry and cranberry towards the minerally finish, this is a sublime example of mature Lapierre in all its glory. Furthermore, based on this bottle, the 2015 will give at least another decade of drinking pleasure. 94/Drink 2025-2035.
