2009 Maximin Grünhaus – von Schubert Abtsberg Riesling Auslese #93

BY NEAL MARTIN | NOVEMBER 20, 2023

Poured on a hot sunny evening in Beaune between a quick dip in the pool and a delicious supper, the 2009 Abstberg Riesling Auslese #93 from winemaker Carl von Schubert ranks as one of the greatest Rieslings I've encountered in the last five years. Glistening straw color in the glass, the 2009 rivets you to the spot with a bouquet of breathtaking clarity and intensity. It completely intoxicates the senses with lime, linseed oil, blood oranges and traces of honey, with an enormous amount of mineralité derived from the vineyard’s blue Devonian slate. The palate is just as entrancing, built around a perfect thread of acidity that effortlessly counterbalances sweetness and viscosity so that this wine seems to dance on the tongue. Those abbots knew where to plant their vines, and von Schubert certainly knows how to make thrilling Riesling. 98/Drink 2023-2068.
